William (Bill) Lansford, Jr.

William C. "Bill" Lansford Jr., 66, passed away at his home on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, after a short but courageous battle with Stage IV lung cancer, though he was not a smoker. Service: Bill's body was donated to UTSW. No service is planned at this time. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DFW Humane Society, Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County or the Hood County Senior Center. He was born in Fort Worth on Sept. 19, 1949. Bill's birth was announced in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram when his mother told his dad, stationed in Guam, of his birth via a ham radio operator relay. As the son of an Army officer, he moved with his family frequently, living in Guam, Seattle, Wash., Frankfort, Germany, and Kansas City before returning to Fort Worth. Bill graduated from Paschal High School in 1968. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas Wesleyan College in 1973. He received his Master's of Business Administration from the University of Nebraska (U of N) in 1975. Upon graduation from U of N, he was recruited and hired by IBM. He worked for IBM for 30 years, retiring as a manager in 2005. During his early years at IBM, Bill met his wife Kim in 1977, in Sioux City, Iowa, when she called him and asked him out on a blind date. They married Jan. 14, 1978. They lived in Sioux City, Marietta, Ga., Carmel, Ind., Chicago, Ill., and Round Rock, Texas, before moving to Arlington in 1996. Bill loved to travel and he and Kim had many great trips for work, pleasure or both, including travels to all continents. Some memorable trips were to China, Japan, Germany, England, Ireland, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Antarctica, all 50 U.S. states, almost every province and territory in Canada, Russia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. He loved adventure. In 2011, Bill climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He tried parasailing and sky diving. He and Kim went scuba diving in Bonaire, the Great Barrier Reef and swam with manatees and dolphins in Florida. Bill served on a number of non-profit boards over the years. He especially loved animals and his time working with the Humane Society Boards in Indianapolis, Ind., Round Rock, Dallas-Fort Worth and the Chicago Anti-Cruelty Society. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William C. Lansford and Virginia Hoff Lansford. Survivors: Wife, Kim Lansford; his special dog-daughter, Shadow; and Kim's sisters, who he claimed as his own sisters, Star Safi and Susan Paul; and numerous friends.
