Gary Shackelford

After graduation in 68’ Gary took an all-expense paid trip to Viet Nam as did many of his fellow students. He came home from his time there with the kind of scars that many had from the experience. He settled down in Fort Worth and married a lady named Bonnie and had a son. Gary was driving down a street in Poly one night and said he heard someone scream for help. He stopped his car and kicked down the door of a burning house to save whoever was in the building. He ended up burning both hands severely and as fate would have it nobody was in the house. Apparently, vagrants had set the fire and left the premises. Gary was hospitalized for a few days then was sent home to recover. In the 90’s Gary was hospitalized with either liver or stomach cancer. He believed it was from the Agent Orange he was sprayed with in Viet Nam. He lingered for a while in the hospital then passed away. Gary was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a special man who cared deeply for others.
