Charlotte McClelland Ice, RNC (Manager II, Antepartum, AAC/MOBS) of Women and Infant Services at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013. Memorial service: 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson Ave., Fort Worth. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, gifts in Charlotte Ice's name may be made to Texas Health Resources Foundation, 612 East Lamar, Ste. 300, Arlington, Texas 76011, for the THFWNICU Family "In-Room" project. This is a fund that supports the development of patient rooms at Harris Hospital that allow a parent to be close to their baby 24/7 in a comfortable setting away from the ICU. Charlotte was born in Lockney on Nov. 25, 1949, to Mary Louise and Dr. Gene Allen McClelland. A graduate of Paschal High School, she earned a B.A. in merchandising and business in 1972 from Texas Woman's University and a B.S. in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 1981. Charlotte worked for over 30 years at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. She started her career as a staff nurse in women's services, including the Labor and Delivery department. She worked as a unit leader and then, most recently as manager of Antepartum, Maternal Observation and the Antenatal Assessment Center. She was viewed as a devoted patient advocate as well as a champion for her staff. In 2013 she received the "Encouraging the Heart Award" for nursing excellence by Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. Charlotte was very involved in community service and philanthropic activities. She volunteered at Samaritan House and Room In the Inn in Fort Worth as well as March of Dimes. She was an active member of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church and her interests included a passion for gardening and travel. The family expresses appreciation for the loving support and care received from VITAS Hospice, friends, family, and the staff of Women and Infant Services at Harris Hospital. Survivors: Charlotte is survived by her sister, Marsha Scarbrough of Reston, Va.; children, Jason Johnston of Fort Worth, Amanda Ice and her husband, Erik Shea, of New York, Charlotte Ice of Fort Worth, Rachel Kapila and her husband, Ranjit Kapila; and grandchildren, Ashwani and Osric Kapila of Austin.

Though I was never good friends with Charlotte, I have known her since elementary school, and I was somewhat dismayed to read that she has passed.

Charlotte was on duty when our daughter was born in 1985 at Harris Hospital.

I always thought she was beautiful. Very sad.
