In Memory

Becky Whitten (Provenza)

Becky Whitten (Provenza)

 Rebecca Provenza

September 24, 1950 — September 2, 2024

Rebecca Whitten Provenza, 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2024 in Albuquerque, New Mexico after an almost 11-year battle with breast cancer. With a zest for life that was unparalleled, she lived every minute to the fullest. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 24, 1950, she had an adventurous spirit that would eventually take her around the world.

A graduate of R. L. Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, she ventured to New Orleans and graduated early with a B.A. in Spanish from Newcomb College at Tulane University. She spent the next years of her life exploring points around the world from the rainforest down the Amazon River to the streets of Europe. Professionally, she worked as a high school teacher and real estate broker, finding success in both, but it was her volunteer work that truly filled her with happiness. She became C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Volunteer of the Year and was always willing to help anyone in need.

In 2006, she married the love of her life, Louis Provenza. They enjoyed 15 incredible years together before his passing. We know that they are together again. Becky was blessed to make incredible friends wherever she went, and she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her spirit of gratitude, happiness and openness will live on through them always.

Becky was preceded in death by her mother (Billye Marjorie Pate Whitten), father (William Ray Whitten) and husband (Louis Joseph Provenza). She is survived by her children Rebecca (Jonathan) Owen, John (Liz) Suarez and Michelle Lauren Provenza; her grandchildren Luke Owen, Amelia Owen, Evelyn Suarez, Sadie Suarez; and her sister Peggy Whitten Watson.

Services will be held Thursday, September 19 at St. John XXIII Catholic Community in Albuquerque with a Rosary at 1pm and Funeral Mass at 1:30 pm. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center.

Becky and I go all the way back to kindergarten at Westcliff Elementary. She was the cutest and no one nicer than Becky. As it's always hard to lose a friend, her passing hit me hard. May we all remember her beautiful smile and fond memories. Rest in peace my friend.

Becky was a kind, beautiful lady. She was easy to talk with and had such a friendly caring approach. I had the opportunity to visit with her at our last event and was surprised to hear about the adversities she has gone through over the past few years. The personal tragedy and medical adversity were sad to hear about but I was impressed by how she was dealing with these life challenges. I admired her perseverance, her strength of character, and her positive approach to life. She will be missed.
